We all know that RAIN is a pretty cool dude.....but how cool is he?  Find out during the English subbed interview that is a part of this program on tvN called Mad.com.  This show aired 2006.11.01 and begins with RAIN performing I'm Coming.  A very strange interview is then conducted. The interview has been subbed by Tokki of Rain-USA.  You will look at your salt shaker in an entirely different light after this!  Following the interview he performs With U.

[Press] (hereafter referred to as P) : You've really lost a lot of weight.
[Rain] : I felt physically sick. I think I‘m not physically up to it. Getting influenza, I became very heated. My body isn't what it used to be. (laughs)

[P] : How have you been since your discharge from the army?
[Rain] : While I was only at a recording studio, I composed all the tracks on my album myself. Bae Jin Ruyl co-wrote the materials in a few tracks.  I stayed up all night working.  As a result, I've reached a satisfactory result.

[P] : How do you get along with actress Kim Tae-hee?
[Rain] : I'm still getting on okay with her.  She treats me really well.

[P] : You must have gone through a lot of distress these days.
[Rain]: (laughs) As you know, being beset by controversies, criticisms, and contretemps is my daily life itself.  I think facts are stubborn things.  Since I never have an obsessive personality, I only concentrated on my preparations for the comeback by emptying my mind of all thoughts of such issues.

[P] : Why didn’t you ask for help, rather than trying to do it on your own?
[Rain] : There are a number of good songs I've gotten, but those songs are high on the charts these days or one of them has already been dominated by an idol star.  Instead of trying to be too trendy, I wanted to find something suitable for me.  "30 Sexy", one of the double title tracks from my album, is a kind of electronic music with a fast, rhythmic beat in the 80s, and "La Song" is a Latin pop.  I decided to sing such songs to live up to my name Rain.  Receiving royalties was not my objective. (laughs)

[P]: The thing that bothers you is the song chart.
[Rain] : Singers want to get better grades. Of course I want my song to be number one on all the music charts.  I feel there is not a morale problem, but I think the day is approaching when I have to quit my job as a dance music singer.
It has been harder for me to move toward higher and grander goals since the target was exceeded.  Now I would lower my sights than to abnormally claw my way to the top of my profession.

[P]: Are you announcing your retirement from the music scene? (laughs)
[Rain] : I didn't mean that.  I'm sorry. (laughs) The person that I respect most is Park Ji-young (JYP) because he still overwhelms the audience throughout his show with his passionate dance skills even though he has passed the age of 40.  I would be better off if I had thoroughly lived beyond my means.  I just want to pleasantly work hard for who I am.

[P] : So, can we see paunchy Rain soon?
[Rain] : Eating like a horse, I only gain weight in the gut, but I should workout steadily to stay fit.

[P] : You were a perfectionist, and an icon of our popular culture who had on average less natural body fat. Now you're a changed man. What is the reason for the change?
[Rain] : When I clenched my teeth, I chipped off pieces of them.  I belatedly found out that working tenaciously with venom was my poison.  While I was having the bad as well as the good, I kept having a cobweb in the throat as if I drunk the seawater.  My original goal was to buy my father a house and to win first prize on the music shows, but there was no limit to my greed.

[P] : They say the reason for joining the army is to rest their mind, but you had a harder time during your military service by getting yourself talked about. You must have been under a lot of stress at the time.
[Rain] : I wondered why this world turned so cold at the time.  I admit that I was wrong about not wearing my military cap, but just because I didn't do so, I was misunderstood as a solider who had vacations for more than 100days.  But I only had vacations for a total of 59 days including a few days I got off as a reward when I was chosen as a special warrior.  I was summoned by the prosecution, the Defense Ministry, and the police and was placed under overnight investigation for days.  I had been thoroughly investigated (laughs), but I was acquitted of all charges. I thought truth would eventually come out.  Now I've come to have an opportunity to clear up the misunderstanding.

[P] : How are your making inroads into America going?
[Rain] : Jay Z actually offered for me to work with him. It's my honor to be offered by him, but the matter is under discussion.  First, I want to be well regarded by Korean people like my parents prior to going to America.  That's why I have been shooting the reality show series to show my real humanity.

[P] : This time, you are barely exposing your body to the public during your performance.
[Rain] : I think a man in his 30s is voluptuous enough to be able to look sexier without taking off his jacket. (laughs) I wanted to compose the songs everyone wants to listen to while driving rather than the visuals.  I was more interested in sparing no cost when it came to making the album than in the past.

[P]: Are you going to launch a world tour again?
[Rain] : My acceptance will hinge on whether or not this album succeeds. (laughs)  I'm planning a concert tour sometime this summer for my fans. They say it is a world tour.  I'll put on a small but lavish performance where I can communicate with fans.  As I've got love calls from South America, Europe, etc., it seems like I treat the crowd with energetic performances.  Instead of performing in a large-scale stadium, I'd like to perform songs with my music band, wearing a T shirt.

[P] : You are still popular in the US.
[Rain] : Fortunately, many of them remembered me. I've heard that they are looking for a distinctive image that differentiates that from Psy who's been getting famous.  Accordingly, I've probably gotten more love calls and had more auditions than before.  After an audition, I've earned a role in film "The Prince".  I've forgotten a lot how to speak English, but I'm focus on studying English.

[P]: What is your ultimate goal in Hollywood?
[Rain] : I'm aiming at a target which is to continue acting in Hollywood, not to work in the short run. I think I'm a competitive Asian actor despite not belonging to one of the major actors. Going through auditions, was the opening I needed for my career.

[P] : What is your goal for yourself that you’re going to push to the next level as a singer?
[Rain] : The most important thing for me as a singer is good producers who are highly involved in making albums.  There is no reason why I shouldn't look for a chance to hit a last shot.  I'm now looking for good producers.

[P] : Having a struggle for perfection as if your life depends on it has tarnished the image of Rain as a singer. What are you thinking of doing?
[Rain] : Now I don't need to struggle.  I won't get the first prize just because I dance hard.  I can shoot for the top if there are good producers.  A very good producer is one of the keys to success.  If I get a good chance, I'll give myself fully to my work.

[P] : I am sorry to say that they say that the epithet "World Star" has gone nowhere, and that you can't be comparable to Psy. When the media judged you by the way you look, you were said to be proud and arrogant.  Some say that you seem to have become intoxicated by your success.
[Rain] : I've never called myself a world star.  As I mentioned earlier, to the best of my knowledge, there is no such word in epithets.  Nobody calls Brad Pitt a world star.  Psy reached number two on the American Billboard charts, and everything that he had was his through his own efforts and talents.  He is entitled to high praise.  As for me, I think my efforts will surely be rewarded. I'm always prepared to welcome criticism excluding malicious comments.  My reputation may have foundations built on sand, but I feel proud of myself because I was selected twice by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people, I'm throwing myself into Hollywood, and I was chosen as the 'Biggest Badass Star' at the MTV Movie Awards.  Even so, I don't know what the future holds.

[P] : Being a target of criticism might cause bitterness to you.
[Rain] : People around me know the truth.  It's a shame the way the media twists my career and accomplishments and misrepresents me.  You know, we can't always receive favorable evaluations.

[P] : What kind of reaction do you want to receive this time?
[Rain] : Rain is confident of showing his own style.

[P] : Rain is not dead - Do you want to hear this?
[Rain] : I'm confident of hearing such things.

[P] : Your passion and expectations about music is on another level.
[Rain] : I think nothing is more interesting than composition. JYP is just the same, really.  What an interesting work!

[P] : Now there's something different about you.
[Rain] : I feel much freer after I let go of my greed that is out of my bounds.
If current idol stars want to get ahead, they have to make more mistakes than their competition. haha.

[P] : Your new songs seem to be easy to dance to.
[Rain] : More flexible dance movements can forge a link between the audience and me.

[P] : You're taking on TVXQ?
[Rain] : Baddies! (in a jovial manner) It's going to be a lot of fun, but I don't know why they always choose to come at the moment. (laughs) I'm sure it is win-win, so I feel good about this. My personal fave is Yunho, who is really loyal.

[RAIN walked past the gate he was supposed to enter and Sangchu called to him.]

Lee Kyung Hee’s latest work “Thankful” was a very successful TV series. It received good comments from both critics and audience.

Journalist: What is your feeling about this work? Any difference compared to your previous works?
Lee: If you are asking me about my satisfaction, then in all my works I am most satisfied with Sangdoo! Let's go to School.

Journalist: What gave you the idea of writing such a kind drama series “Thankful”?
Lee: To tell you the truth, I suffered a lot because of  A Love to Kill. The blow was great because of the criticisms. Of course sharp criticism was necessary, but I was thinking at that time, why couldn’t people be more gentle to comfort and to encourage… I even thought of putting an end to what I loved most: writing a TV series.

But I got through with the “trust” I received, the trust of people around me… the actor named Jung Jihoon who was the lead actor in A Love To Kill. He gave me courage…. That friend (Jihoon) was badly hurt because of this drama (A Love To Kill). He probably was very tired himself in many ways, but to me, the not-so-good writer, he said, “Teacher is the best”, “As long as teacher insists, we would have no doubt it’s the best.” Besides… Jung Jihoon gave up releasing an album because of this drama (A Love To Kill). He agreed to star in it just based on his trust in me. So I really felt very sorry, very ashamed, in every way. But he gave me trust. That’s why we have maintained very good relationship.

Recently I have seen actors blaming writers for an unsuccessful TV series. When I saw that, I would think “I was really a lucky writer.” In any case, such kind of “trust” allowed me to be thankful to the world, and it made me stand up again… From that trust I wanted to write a story about “trust”, and hence “Thankful.”

In the beginning I was very strict with Rain. I told him, “You star in this drama. If you perform badly, everything will be over. So you must work hard…. You should stay with Hyo Jin (the leading actress) and learn from her."  So from the beginning I made Rain very nervous.

But Rain really did very well.

At first I gave him this Sangdoo character, but gradually I felt from him what kind of character Sangdoo was. Of course Sangdoo was Rain. Rain brought out life in Sangdoo.

I then felt that without Rain’s interpretation, there wouldn’t be a Sangdoo. So he really did very well.

Rain was really hard working. I believed he suffered physically as well. He even contracted symptoms of hair loss because of the drama, so you could imagine how hard it was for him. He had to play the past and the present, he had to be a gigolo and then a student, so Sangdoo had to change his hair style very often – sometimes as many as over 6 times a day. That’s why he suffered hair loss.

Originally the script was only for Sangdoo to die…..Originally I wanted Sangdoo to die blissfully. When I was writing chapter 15, I received mail from (Gong) Hyo Jin [Rain's co-star ^@@^]: “Please do not let Sangdoo die. If you must let him die, then please let me die as well. Because I can’t live on if Sangdoo dies.”

When I received this mail I was wondering how could there be such a thing, but she sent me 6 identical letters. So I called her and asked her what she was doing, and she cried. I told her it was only Sangdoo and not Rain who’s going to die. But she answered, “Yinhoon (the female character) couldn’t live on without Sangdoo. Could you let Sangdoo live? If not, then let both of us die together please.”

I couldn’t and had no intention to change the script. I told her we were short of time, but she still pleaded me to change. I got mad and called her an idiot. After I hung up I called Rain and asked him what he thought.

Rain said, “I don’t know, but if Sangdoo was to die alone, isn’t his life too pitiful? What has he done wrong that he has to die alone?”

When I saw these two kids in the studio, I suddenly realized that it would be too cruel to follow my script and let Sangdoo die alone. These two children could not be separated! Whether alive or dead, let them be together – so I changed my mind.

The scene where Sangdoo talked lively to Yinhoon in the prison cell is the feeling I had planned well in advance. I wanted to show though in jail, Sangdoo was not tired, not self pitiful because he always had Yinhoon in his heart, and so his life was not so tragic. But during the prison cell shooting scene, Rain always cried.

My scripts were very detailed. I did not ask him to cry in that scene.

Rain was totally into the character, so he cried badly. He cried so hard he was choked and could not continue his acting.

I discovered that Rain was right, because Rain had totally became Sangdoo.

Además... Jung Ji Hoon dejó de la lado poner a la venta un álbum por este drama (A love to kill). Estuvo de acuerdo en participar solamente por su confianza en mi. Así que me sentí muy apenada, con mucha vergüenza, de todas formas. Pero el me dió confianza. Por eso hemos mantenido una muy buena relación.

Recientemente, he visto a actores culpar a los escritores por series sin éxito. Cuando vi eso pude pensar “fui una escritora con suerte”. En cualquier caso, ese tipo de “confianza” me permitió estar agradecida con el mundo, y me hizo levantarme de nuevo... Por esa confianza quise escribir una historia sobre la “confianza”, y de ahí surge “Thankful”.

Al comienzo fui bastante estricta con Rain. Le dije, “Protagonizas este drama. Si actúas mal, todo terminará. Así que tienes que trabajar duro... Debes permanecer al lado de Hyo Jin (la actriz principal) y aprender de ella". Así que desde el principio puse a Rain muy nervioso.
Pero Rain realmente lo hizo muy bien.

Al principio le di este personaje Sangdoo, pero poco a poco me sentí de él qué tipo de personaje era Sangdoo. Por supuesto Sangdoo era Rain. Rain trajo a la vida a Sangdoo.

Rain estaba totalmente sumergido en el personaje, así que lloraba mucho. Lloraba con tanta fuerza que se atragantó y no pudo continuar su actuación.
Descubrí que Rain tenía razón, porque Rain se había convertido totalmente en Sangdoo.

Lee: Sejujurnya, saya sangat menderita karena A Love To Kill. Pukulan yang sangat besar dari kritik. Tentu saja kritik tajam itu perlu, namun saat itu saya pikir, mengapa mereka tidak bisa lebih membesarkan hati dan memberikan dorongan semangat... Saya bahkan berpikir untuk mengakhiri apa yang paling saya sukai: menulis serial TV.

Tetapi saya berhasil melalui semua itu berkat "kepercayaan" yang saya terima, kepercayaan dari orang-orang disekitar saya... seorang aktor bernama Jung JiHoon yang adalah pemeran utama dalam A Love To Kill. Dia memberi saya keyakinan... Sahabat tersebut (JiHoon) sangat terpukul karena drama ini (A Love To Kill). Ketika saya melihat kedua anak ini di studio, saya tiba-tiba menyadari akan sangat kejam untuk mengikuti naskah saya dan membiarkan SangDoo mati sendirian. Kedua anak itu tidak bisa dipisahkan! Hidup ataupun mati, biarkan mereka bersama - maka saya berubah pikiran.

Adegan dimana SangDoo berbicara dengan Yin Hoon di penjara adalah perasaan yang telah saya rencanakan sebelumnya. Saya ingin menunjukkan meskipun dalam penjara, SangDoo tidak lelah, tidak mengasihani diri sendiri karena dia selalu memiliki Yin Hoon dalam hatinya, sehingga  hidupnya tidak begitu tragis. Tetapi selama shooting adegan di penjara, RAIN selalu menangis.

Naskah saya sangat rinci. Saya tidak memintanya untuk menangis dalam adegan itu.

RAIN telah benar-benar masuk dalam karakternya, sehingga dia menangis sejadi-jadinya. Dia menangis sampai tersedak dan tidak bisa melanjutkan aktingnya.
Saya menyadari bahwa RAIN benar, karena RAIN telah benar-benar menjadi SangDoo.

South Korean SuperStar RAIN's final concert before embarking on military service was packed with Passion and Love. SOUTH Korean heartthrob RAIN has left millions of fans craving for his performance after putting aside his celebrity role for a stint in the military.

Malaysian fans are a lucky lot as they will be treated to RAIN:The Best Show tonight on Astro.

It is the world TV premiere of RAIN's farewell concert tour across Asia. Pouring Passion and Love into the show, RAIN’s explosive energy and amazing dance moves are not to be missed.

Here is an interview transcript with the SuperStar provided by Celestial Movies:

1.This is your last concert before military service. How do you feel?

Since this is my last concert before I embark on military service, I would like to communicate with the audience in a more interactive way. I put more emphasis on communicating with them instead of giving the usual performance-oriented show.

2.You broke into tears on stage. Fans were deeply moved by your sincerity.

I was really moved by the audience. I made my debut as a singer on April 24, 2002, and time passes so fast. I have a lot of pleasant flashback and I just couldn’t help breaking into tears.

3.Some artistes are afraid that they would lose their fans and audience after

military service. What is your view on that?

For me, serving the army is my solemn responsibility and it is an honour to be able to become part of the military. I am sure there is nothing I should be afraid of as long as I live with positive thinking.

4.What have you learnt in the army so far?

I always get to experience new stuff and am happy when I manage to overcome the challenges. I always consider my life as a singer from 2002 up to the moment I started military service as Act One, and army life is the second stage in my life. I look forward to Act Three, which is when I get discharged from the Army.

5.Is there anything you would like to tell your loving fans?

I will let you cheat on me during the two years when I'm serving the Army. Just make sure you come back to me when I return on stage. 

6.Whats the highlight of this concert?

I had toured various cities in South Korea, namely, Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, Gwangju and Jeju. Its the first time I presented my new song Busan Women on stage. I kicked off my concert tour in Busan, which went well with the title of my song Busan Women.  I composed the music and wrote the lyrics myself and hope they’ll like it.

7.How have you been doing recently? 

Any interesting episodes in the army you would like to share with your fans?

Recently, I have been appointed as jury member for the audition to pick talent for the programme, Be The Star, run by the military broadcast station. It is my honour to work with fellow singers KCM and Park Hyo-shin and exchange ideas.
Among the participants, one of them sang my song, Ways To Avoid The Sun. He sang really well but I felt he should have been more confident and not be too influenced by my style.

8.Your new film Soar Into The Sun was released last month in South Korea. 

Whats your character in the film?

I played a military officer at the air force and I was happy to act in this film because I experience life as an air force pilot.

8.Many people are talking about the kissing scenes between you and lead actress Shin Se-gyung. How was it?

I enjoyed the romantic scenes with her a lot but unfortunately, those scenes were deleted by the director.

9.Do you have any plans after your discharge?

I don’t have any particular plans at the moment. People may think army life is tough, but I enjoy it and am even thinking if I should continue working in the army after my two-year term.

10.Do you have a busy life in the army?

Apart from the daily duties, I am also appointed as the publicity ambassador of the Military Manpower Administration. Attending the orientation ceremonies for the newcomers has become part of my work.
